Episode 49: 1961-1962

Richard Tucker

The 1961-1962 season was Alfred Hubay’s first season as House Manager for the Metropolitan Opera. Among the highlights of that season are the delaying of the opening due to a labor dispute, the opening night borrowed production of La fanciulla del West with Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker and Anselmo Colzani, a new production of Un ballo in maschera with Carlo Bergonzi, Leonie Rysanek, Robert Merrill, with conductor Nello Santi in his Met debut and the debut of Joan Sutherland. Episode 50: 1961-1962

Galina Vishnevskaya

The 1961-1962 season was Alfred Hubay’s first season as House Manager for the Metropolitan Opera. Among the highlights of that season are the debut and brief Met career of Galina Vishnevskaya, the debuts of tenors George Shirley, Sandor Konya and John Alexander, Anna Moffo singing all three heroines in Les contes d’Hoffmann, the return of Ferruccio Tagliavini in L’elisir d’amore with Anna Moffo, the replacing of a replacement by the one he replaced during a performance of Die Walküre, the debut of Gerda Lammers as Elektra with Frances Yeend as Chrysothemis and a description of the position of House Manager. Episode 51: 1962-1963

The 1962-1963 Metropolitan Opera season found Alfred Hubay adding to his responsibilities, not only the role of House Manager,, but it marked the beginning of 38 years of appearances on the Texaco Opera Quiz. Other highlights of the season include the beginning of the move to Lincoln Center, the opening of the acoustically flawed Philharmonic Hall with the Met’s participation in presenting de Falla’s Atlantida and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, the opening night Andréa Chenier with Franco Corelli, a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the effects of a newspaper strike (Part 1 of 3).
